AFTERmonths of arduous training, the Bowraville Goannas open their season this Saturday against the Hastings Vikings at home.
The majority of the grand final squad has returned, although a number of new faces have been introduced to the playing group.
The pre-season has not been smooth sailing for the Goannas. They lost both trial matches, and injuries have hit hard, especially in the front row … this will mean several players will be out of position in the early rounds.
Despite the set backs there has been plenty to work on, with front line defence and defensive patterns top priorities.
Several new major sponsors have come on board through the relentless work of Rex Allan, and their
generosity will hopefully lay the foundations for the continued expansion as a club.
As for the match, the Vikings and Goannas are close friends due to current and former players representing both teams.
The match will start at 2.30pm.
In addition to the day, the under18s side may get to play, marking ahistoric occasion in the development
of rugby union in the area. If their game goes ahead, it will kick off around 1pm.
Special thanks must go to Bruce Frame for refereeing this weekend and conducting the assistant referees course this week.
Training is from 6pm at Hennessey Tape Oval on Monday and Wednesday.
All new senior and junior players are welcome.
