A police officer at Kandos suffered a needle stick injury when he opened the front door of the police station.Police are appealing to the community for information after a serving police officer suffered a needle stick injury when he opened the front door to the Kandos police station on Tuesday.
At about 4.50am the officer was disturbed by his dogs growling at the neighbouring police residence.
After checking the police station was secure he returned to his residence.
At 8am he and another officer went to the police station to start their rostered shifts and when the constable opened the screen door and felt pain in his hand.
He saw a needle fall to the ground. The other officer rendered first aid and the injured constable was taken to Rylstone Hospital for treatment.
The officer was unable to complete his shift and will now have to undergo several months of tests and treatment.
A crime scene was established at the police station and several items were seized for further forensic testing.
Detective Inspector Cameron Whiteside, crime manager at Mudgee Local Area Command, is leading the investigation into what is believed to have been a deliberate act.
“I am extremely concerned by this targeted and callous act towards my fellow officers,” he said.
“I’m also greatly concerned that the needle was left in the front door of the station and could just have easily injured a member of the public seeking police assistance.
“I urge anyone with information about this cowardly act to contact police immediately,’ Detective Inspector Whiteside said.
