GORDON Park Rainforest, a long-time beloved patch of green in the urban heart of Nambucca Heads, will be officially closed to pedestrian access this week.
The unpalatable decision was made by Nambucca Shire councillors on the strength of information from a meeting with the park’s committee of management on April 13.
At that meeting volunteer John Tait outlined the destruction that had been caused by the flying fox colony now resident in the canopy.
The council’s general manager, Michael Coulter, said signs would be erected at entrances to the park as soon as possible.
The councillors also voted to include links on the council website to the relevant State government pages for residents seeking information about the protected nature of the species and how people and flying foxes can best co-exist.
