Golfers shine early in season

THE first round of the J. Bache Cup Stableford Event was played at Cummins Golf Club with twelve players competing for the daily prizes and one player putting in her last card for handicapping. When the scores were handed in you would have thought it was halfway through the golf season rather than the second competition for 2014.

There is still plenty of run on the course, which is certainly an advantage to those who manage to hit straight down the middle, but players who are a little wayward may find themselves wasting shots under trees or bushes attempting to return to the fairways.

Although the scrapes are quite heavy with the new sand at least they are consistent and after the forecast rains they will be easier to handle.

WINNERS: Division one winner Joyleen Pedler and division two winner Chris Koch.

In division one (0-29 handicap), the Forbes Furniture golf ball was closely contested by six players with Joyleen Pedler carding an excellent score of 41 points, closely followed by Anne Minhard who also had a good round scoring 40.

Three players competed in division two with captain Chris Koch carding her best round with an unbeatable score of 48.

Joan Nelligan, who came in second with 36, supplied the best morning tea (apple teacake that would easily win first prize in any cooking competition), which was devoured by the multitudes.

Three nine-holers also played a stableford round with Maureen Maloney winning on a countback from Ronda Glover, both scoring 11 points.

Nearest the pin (NTP): fourth Annie Minhard and 17th Chris Koch.

Novelty (most fairways): 16th Joyleen Pedler and Joan Nelligan, sixth Maureen Maloney.

Lyn Lemmey-Secker had some great shots winning the Sportscene golf ball after scoring two birdies on holes (10) and (11) and Claire Holman chipped out on (4).

Thanks to Cummins Mowers and Motorcycles and Doug Watsons Menswear for sponsoring the NTP event.

Congratulations to the three ladies who broke their handicaps the previous week: Judy Holman 30-29, Joan Nelligan 31-30, Chris Koch 36-35.

Wednesday, April 30 will be a stroke round with Tanya Chandler and Joyleen Pedler on tee duty and Tracey Wooley hostess. See you there!
