Facing charges: Marie Simone.
CRONULLA businesswoman and former Sutherland Shire councillor Marie Simone pleaded not guilty in court this week to four charges of obtaining money by deception.
Ms Simone, who was named in court documents as Maria Susan Elizabeth Simone, was represented by a solicitor when the matter came before Downing Centre Local Court.
No facts were tendered, and the case was adjourned until June 25, with bail continued.
Ms Simone was charged in February following an investigation by detectives from NSW Police State Crime Command’s fraud and cybercrime squad.
Strike Force McMaster investigated alleged widespread equipment finance fraud involving fake invoices.
Three men, who cannot be named, alleged to be principals in the matter, appeared separately in court on the same day and were remanded.
Ms Simone operated a boutique in Cronulla Street from 1985 until 2011 when she opened a restaurant, Simone’s on the Park, overlooking the beach.
The restaurant has since closed.
Ms Simone served two terms as an independent in the council’s A Ward from 2004 to 2012, but was defeated when she sought a third term.
