CinéfestOZ pulls films from Australia and France to showcase over five days in August across the South West.
Last year about 250 local volunteers took part in the event.
CinéfestOZ president David Barton told council the festival was a “state-wide cultural asset.”
“It’s achieving enormous outcomes at a regional level in terms of its economic benefits, in terms of tourism and in terms of community benefits and cultural benefits,” Mr Barton.
During the meeting City of Bunbury Mayor Gary Brennan pledged his personal support for the request.
“Can I just say to you publicly what I said to you privately and that is the City of Bunbury is a very willing partner in regional faculties, we have our wonderful assets with the Regional Art Gallery and Regional Entertainment Centre,” Mr Brennan said.
“We wish to work in harmony with the whole South West, we’re part of the South West and that’s our job to promote the region.”
Mr Bartonsaid last year’s event had been “an extremely successful venture.”
“We are keen to build on [that] this year and aspire to become one of the top three film festivals in Australia.”
He also said the six-figure film prize offered this year, the most generous in Australia, would attract big interest.
“The economic drivers from a festival such as this reach to what’s occurring during the festival but also the ability to bring films to be made in this region,” Mr Barton said.
“The outcomes in terms of spend are enormous, when we see a film that has four or eight million dollars budget, a month or more of that being spent here in the South West can see anything up to 50 per cent directly injected from films.”
CinéfestOZ takes place from August 20 to 24.
