Brigade captain Garth Palmer said the five were aged from their 20s to their 40s.

“They wanted to do something for the district,” Mr Palmer said.

The five are undertaking training to become operational firefighters.

Trainees undertake training at their pace.

“We are trying to get them trained by June but it’s up to them,” Mr Palmer said.

Most of the five are locals with one a relative newcomer to the district.

Among the new recruits is Leanne Dyson, who said she was enjoying the training.

Ms Dyson in in her fourth year as brigade secretary and said the other female recruits had convinced her to take the step to also become an operational firefighter.

Mr Palmer said the brigade had about 20 members and was always seeking new people to join. The brigade had so far this year attended more than 50 call outs, he said.

People interested in joining the brigade can contact Mr Palmer on 0458 651 809.

The brigade meets at 7.30pm on the first Tuesday of the month and holds training at 6pm on the other Tuesdays and on Sunday mornings.
